In honor of his feast on this day, this lecture will tell the complicated and compelling story of Thomas Becket, first rowdy best friend to the English king but soon a dramatically martyred archbishop. Building on narratives, images of martyrdom, and relic objects, this examination of Becket’s life and legacy will expose the heightened tensions between Church and Crown in twelfth-century England.
